50800 Seminole Drive
Cabazon, CA 92230
A trip to Cabazon would not be complete without visiting the famous roadside dinosaurs. These gigantic, sculptured roadside attractions are world famous.
Dinny, pictured here is a 150-ton, life-sized wonder, fashioned after an Apatosarus. Dinny's construction began in 1964 and took approximately eleven years to complete. Amazingly, the materials used to created these behemoths were left over from the construction of nearby Interstate-10 at a cost of nearly $300,000.
The purpose of these marvels was to attract visitors to the Wheel Inn Cafe. Owner of the cafe and mastermind behind the project, sculptor and portrait artist Claude K. Bell, illicited the help of ironworker Gerald Hufstetler who worked on the project almost entirely alone.

...Cabot Yerxa Veteran of the Alaska Gold Rush of 1898, homesteaded 160 acres here in 1913. By a hand-dug well, he discovered the extensive supply of underground hot water that in 1933 became the basis for the start of Desert Hot Springs. In 1941 he began this pueblo-inspired home, the construction of which was his single-minded devotion until he died in 1963."
-County of Riverside Historical Marker
This historical museum and art gallery was abandoned and vandalized after the death of it's original owner in 1965. Cole Eyraud who was a friend of the late owner held off bulldozer demolition with only a shotgun. The Eyraud Family later purchased, lovingly restored, and subsequently donated the property to the City of Desert Hot Springs.
Mastermind behind the handmade Hopi-style building was famous adventurer Cabot Yerxa. Constructed only of materials found nearby this amazing 24 year project contains 35 rooms, 150 windows, and over 60 doors. Yerxa homesteaded the location and soon discovered what makes Desert Hot Springs what it is today - hot mineral springs.
Today, visitors will find a Pueblo Art Gallery, bookstore, and a 43 foot tall Indian monument named "Waokiye" hand-carved out of a Sequoia Redwood that was amazingly 750 years old. Also, resident artists can be observed creating in a myriad of media types right in the museum courtyard.
This one-of-a-kind structure, it's unique builder, and incredible story are surrounded by some inspiring American history. So, don't miss the chance to be a part of it. The museum is open for public tours during specific times and accepts donations of time, money, and materials. For additional information please contact the museum.

"Eighth Wonder of the World"
The Tram has been labeled the "eighth wonder of the world," and a historical civil engineering landmark - for good reason. Any trip to the desert would not be complete without a ride on this spectacular modern marvel.
Construction began on October 10th, 1961 in the northern mountainous region of Chino Canyon. Amazingly, the entire process was completed mainly with the use of helicopters and six pilots from United Helicopter of Santa Monica. Every person and piece of material needed to be lifted to the construction site atop the mountain. Also, all heavy construction equipment required complete dismantling at the bottom, transportation to it's destination high above the desert floor and then reassembly.
7,000 hours, 23,000 missions, and NO accidents later, Francis F. Crocker's 31 year old dream was complete and open for business on September 12th, 1963.
Once at the top of the tram your breathtaking journey is only beginning. The Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness offer many activites: hiking, winter sports, camping, nature walks, and much more.
Many residents and visitors take the short trip to the top to escape the summer desert temperatures, enjoy a fine dining experience at the Peaks Restaurant or a cocktail at the Lookout Lounge.
Don't forget to bring your camera because this is an adventure you will want to remember and share.
